On ABC 7.30 there was a report tonight featuring the story of Sam Dibley. Sam tragically took his own life in a Coffs Harbour psych ward in 2009. There should have been a proper search to prevent Sam doing harm to himself.
Jaimie Byrne also died in the same mental health unit from a combination of illegal drugs and prescribed medications. Jaimie brought knives, methadone and syringes into the high dependency unit as he was not properly searched. The Coffs HDU staff certified that he was alive while he was dead in the ward. His death was preventable. Jaimie leaves behind a wife and seven children.
We need to do more to stop any deaths in custody.
